Butyl crotonate is a high resistance polycarboxylic acid that has been used in tissue culture experiments to produce cross-linked protein particles. It reacts with hydroxyl groups on the surface of particles, producing a cross-link between the protein molecules. This reaction occurs by adding butyl crotonate to the tissue culture media and incubating for 24 hours at 37 degrees Celsius. The dry weight of the polymerized material can be determined by weighing the amount of butyl crotonate before and after incubation. Butyl crotonate is also used as a reactive agent in fruit extract preparations, where it can be used as an alternative to glutaraldehyde or formaldehyde.
