4-Hydroxyphenylacetaldehyde is a dopamine precursor that belongs to the group of signal peptides. It is derived from dopamine by removing the amino acid proline and adding four hydroxyl groups. 4-Hydroxyphenylacetaldehyde has been shown to be involved in plant physiology, as it is a component of the plant hormone auxin. This molecule has been used as a substrate for in vitro experiments on thermodynamic data and leaching, which are common problems associated with pharmaceutical production. 4-Hydroxyphenylacetaldehyde can also be used to neutralize alkaline drugs, such as penicillin, by forming an insoluble salt in water. Titration calorimetry experiments have shown that 4-hydroxyphenylacetaldehyde has physiological levels in humans, making it a potential drug candidate for diabetes neuropathy treatment.
