N-(2-Hydroxyethyl)-3-nitrobenzamide is a fluorogenic compound that can be used as a fluorescent probe for sensing, or to study the interaction of molecular chains. It has been shown to have an anion in its structure and can emit fluorescence when excited with light. N-(2-Hydroxyethyl)-3-nitrobenzamide has also been shown to interact with other molecules by absorption of light at wavelengths between 350 and 440 nm. This interaction is dependent on the environment, and spectroscopic methods are used to determine this environment.
