Tellurium is a chemical element that has the symbol Te and atomic number 52. It is a brittle, mildly toxic, rare, silver-white metalloid. Tellurium is found in the Earth's crust only in minute amounts. The most common tellurides are calaverite (AgTe), sylvanite (AuTe 2 ), and petzite (AgAuTe 2 ). These minerals were originally discovered during the California Gold Rush and named after the Latin word for tellus, meaning earth. Tellurium is also found as a trace mineral in ores of gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc, cadmium and mercury. Tellurium was discovered by Franz Joseph Muller von Reichenstein in 1783 when he found it as an impurity in samples of what was then believed to be gold. Tellurium is one of the few elements that can form stable metal oxides with high resistance at room temperature.
