The rate of the reaction between trimethyluric acid and chlorine is high at high concentrations. Trimethyluric acid reacts with chlorine to form methyl chloride, which is a highly reactive compound. The reaction mechanism for this is not fully understood, but it is believed that the methoxylated functional theory may be involved. Clofibric acid and chloral react with trimethyluric acid under similar conditions to form 1,3-dichloropropene and chloroform. Diethyltoluamide also reacts with trimethyluric acid at higher rates in comparison to other halides.
