Disodium adipate is a sodium salt of a fatty acid that is used as a sealant and water-proofing agent. It reacts with polyvinyl chloride to form a metal carbonyl complex, which is responsible for the sealant's sealing property. Disodium adipate reacts with the hydroxyl group on the fatty acid molecule to form a carboxylate group, which is responsible for its water-proofing property. The reaction mechanism of this compound is similar to that of disodium sebacate. Disodium adipate has been shown to have mitochondrial membrane potential and can be used as an experimental model for mitochondrial diseases such as Parkinson's disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
