p-Hexadecyloxyaniline (HDOA) is a liquid crystal that exhibits self-assembly in the form of a columnar phase with hexagonal symmetry. The columnar phase was characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), optical microscopy, and calorimetry. The NMR spectra showed HDOA to be a chiral compound with an axial ratio of 1.4:1. The columnaar phase was also observed by optical microscopy as well as by calorimetry, which showed that HDOA has a higher melting temperature than the isotropic phase. HDOA also exhibits strong optical activity, which can be seen in its circular dichroism spectrum.
