3-Aminoisonicotinic acid hydrate is a drug that acts as an allosteric modulator of glutamate receptors. It has been shown to inhibit the release of acetylcholine and serotonin in animal models. 3-Aminoisonicotinic acid hydrate has also been found to have potential as a diagnostic drug for Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and Huntington's disease. 3-Aminoisonicotinic acid hydrate binds to glutamate receptors on the postsynaptic membrane of neurons and blocks the binding of glutamate, inhibiting the activation of its ionotropic receptors. This leads to a decrease in neuronal excitability, which may be beneficial for the treatment of conditions such as epilepsy or neuropathic pain.
