1-(Ethanesulfonyl)-4-methylbenzene is a benzyl derivative of the organometallic compound ethanesulfonylbenzene. It has been shown to be reactive with carbanions, sulfoxides, and sulfones under certain conditions. The magnesium salt of 1-(ethane-1-sulfonyl)-4-methylbenzene has been shown to react with thiophene in a tetrahydrothiophene ring closure reaction. The yield of this reaction was found to be dependent on the amount of magnesium used.
