5-Nitroquinoline 1-oxide is an ionizing radiation that has been shown to be cytotoxic in animals and humans. It can cause modifications in DNA and has been used to study the effects of ionizing radiation on populations of cells. 5-Nitroquinoline 1-oxide is a hydroxamic acid that is cytotoxic to bacteria, inhibiting the growth of Staphylococcus aureus at lower temperatures. This compound also inhibits the growth of other gram-positive bacteria such as Bacillus subtilis, Enterococcus faecalis, and Streptococcus pneumoniae. 5-Nitroquinoline 1-oxide binds to bacterial DNA by covalent binding with amide groups and forms stable crosslinks with DNA strands.
