Trichloromelamine is a chemical compound that is used as a disinfectant and an antimicrobial agent. It has been shown to be effective against typhimurium and other gram-positive bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes, and Enterococcus faecalis. Trichloromelamine has also been shown to have some activity against gram-negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Trichloromelamine contains three functional groups: the amide group, the hydroxyl group, and the polymerase chain. The amide group reacts with hydrochloric acid in the stomach to form ammonia gas; this gas kills bacteria by denaturing proteins. The hydroxyl group reacts with sodium carbonate in water to form sodium bicarbonate and hydrogen chloride; this reaction creates an alkaline environment that kills many types of bacteria. The polymerase chain
