Description:

4-Amino-1-methylpyridinium iodide is an anticholinesterase agent that blocks the action of acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junction by inhibiting the enzyme cholinesterase. It has been shown to be effective in a number of animal models, including homogenates from rat brain and expressed aminopyridine, which were used to study its effects on synaptic transmission. 4-Amino-1-methylpyridinium iodide has also been shown to inhibit calcium ion influx into nerve cells, leading to unblocking of acetylcholine-induced muscle relaxation.
