Segesterone acetate is a synthetic progestin that is used as a contraceptive. It works by preventing ovulation, thickening cervical mucus to inhibit sperm motility, and modifying the endometrium in order to prevent implantation of the fertilized egg. Segesterone acetate has been shown to have no effect on fertilization or early embryonic development. It has been shown that chronic exposure of segesterone acetate does not affect the production of diagnostic agents, growth factors, or immunosuppressants in humans. This drug also has no effect on polymorphic markers or autoimmune diseases in women. Segesterone acetate is effective with a daily dosage of 2 mgs for three months and should not be taken during pregnancy.
