Isobutyl heptanoate is a volatile liquid that is classified as an aliphatic hydrocarbon. It is a modifier for nitrocellulose and other explosives, and is used as a diluent for inorganic solvents such as hexane or benzene. Isobutyl heptanoate is also an ester compound with the chemical formula CH3(CH2)5COOC8H17. This compound can be synthesized by dehydration of ethyl butyrate with chlorine gas, which replaces the two hydroxyl groups on the butyrate molecule with two hydrogen atoms. The chlorination process occurs via substitution of chlorine for hydrogens on the double bonds of the butyrate molecule.
The physical properties of this compound are not well known, but it has been found to have a boiling point of about 190 degrees Celsius at atmospheric pressure.
