Tin(IV) fluoride is an inorganic chemical compound with the formula SnF4. It is a white crystalline solid that exists as a mixture of two forms, differing by the arrangement of their atoms in the crystal lattice. One form consists of chains of tin atoms, while the other has layers of tin atoms. It is highly soluble in water and acetonitrile but insoluble in benzene and ether. Tin(IV) fluoride can be prepared by reacting tin tetrachloride with hydrochloric acid or hydrogen chloride gas. Tin(IV) fluoride can also be prepared from the reaction between tin perchlorate and sodium azide, although this method is not as common due to its high reactivity. Tin(IV) fluoride has been shown to be a useful reagent for preparing compounds containing phosphane ligands, such as PF3Cl2, which are used as catalysts for olefin metathesis reactions.
