Silver iodate is a salt of silver and iodine. It is used as a disinfectant, as it reacts with organic material to form silver chloride. Silver iodate is biodegradable, unlike many other ionic antimicrobial agents. The reaction mechanism for the formation of silver iodate has not been fully elucidated, but it is known that hydrochloric acid and sodium nitrate are required for the reaction to occur. The reaction product can be purified using a chromatographic method or titration method. Silver iodate has been shown to have antimicrobial properties against bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus.
