Silver phosphate is a chemical compound that contains silver, phosphorus and oxygen. It is used as a disinfectant to control bacteria and fungi in water treatment, food processing and other industrial applications. Silver phosphate has been shown to be more stable than silver nitrate or silver sulfate under various conditions such as pH, temperature, and light exposure. It has also been found that the antimicrobial activity of silver phosphates against Escherichia coli O157:H7 was greater than that of silver nitrate or silver sulfate. The stability of the compound can be attributed to the electrostatic interaction between the positively charged ions of the metal and negatively charged ions of oxygen.
Silver phosphate has also been found to have a strong ability to inhibit bacterial growth with minimal effects on human cells in vitro assays.
