Aluminium iodide is a chemical compound that belongs to the group of halides. It has a reactive hydroxyl group and is used as a catalyst in certain chemical reactions. Aluminium iodide can be produced by reacting anhydrous aluminium chloride with iodine, hydrochloric acid, or solid iodine. The reaction of aluminium iodide with hydrogen fluoride produces aluminium fluoride and water vapor. The structural analysis of aluminium iodide indicates that it has a diphenyl ether structure, which makes it different from most other halides. Aluminium iodide is also used as a catalyst in the production of organic compounds such as phenols and esters. Aluminium iodide is toxic when inhaled or ingested because it reacts with water vapour in the lungs to produce hydroiodic acid, which causes tissue damage through necrosis.
