2-Methyloctanal is an organic solvent that is used in the production of cellulose acetate, a polymer that is used as a film base and in packaging. 2-Methyloctanal has been shown to be a bidentate ligand that reacts with silicon at low energy, leading to the formation of polymers. This chemical can also be used as a cross-linking agent in polyvinyl. 2-Methyloctanal can be used for analytical high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) on polymers such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC). It can react with sodium hydroxide solution and form sodium methoxide, which has been shown to increase the stability of PVC by preventing degradation from oxygen radicals.
