Barium tungstate is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula BaWO4. It is a white, crystalline material that has a thermal expansion coefficient of 12.2 x 10-6/°C and a melting point of 3,898°C. Barium tungstate can be used to prepare other compounds, such as copper oxide, by heating it with copper metal or by adding sodium salts. This compound also has photocatalytic activity, which means it can decompose hydrocarbons and organic compounds at room temperature when exposed to light. Barium tungstate is also used in x-ray absorption spectroscopy and electrochemical methods for the determination of dna sequences and genome mapping.
