Lithium iodide is a chemical reagent that absorbs neutrons in the nuclear industry. It also has applications in industrial process and environmental pollution. Lithium iodide is used to coat the walls of steel vessels or tanks, and as an activator for the polymerization of organic materials. Lithium iodide can be made by reacting lithium hydroxide with hydroiodic acid and potassium iodide in aqueous solution. The compound is very sensitive to moisture and must be stored under nitrogen or argon gas, or in a vacuum desiccator.
