Calcium tungstate is a white, crystalline solid that emits light when exposed to sunlight and other sources of radiation. It has high values of light emission and is used in process optimization and as a coating material for photovoltaic cells. Calcium tungstate can be synthesized by the reaction between calcium chloride and zirconium oxide. It also reacts with hydrochloric acid to produce molybdenum, which is a metal that can be used in biological applications. The biological properties of calcium tungstate have been studied in vitro with laser ablation. This compound also has thermal expansion properties similar to those of magnesium salts and sodium carbonate.
