It is an efficient light absorber and as such can be used as an active layer for photovoltaic devices. 7,7-Dimethyl-5,7-dihydroindeno[2,1-b]carbazole has been shown to have a high quantum efficiency with unitary conversion efficiencies up to 20%. This material has a nonradiative recombination rate that is lower than other materials and it also shows good thermal stability. 7,7-Dimethyl-5,7-dihydroindeno[2,1-b]carbazole is used in many solar cell applications because of its efficiency and low cost.
