2-(Benzylamino)-2-phenylacetonitrile (BAPN) is an aldimine. It reacts with cyanide to form an adduct that is selective for apical positions on the benzene ring. The reaction mechanism of this process has been reexamined and found to proceed through a nitriles intermediate. BAPN can be used as a catalyst in organic synthesis, yielding high yields and good selectivity. This organocatalyst can be used to synthesize pyrrole derivatives by reacting with ammonia or amines.
