Description:

4-Hydroxyphenyldimethylsulfonium methyl sulfate (4HPDMS) is an organic synthetic reagent that is useful for the synthesis of peptides. It is a high yield, inexpensive alternative to other methods that are commercially available. 4HPDMS can be used to introduce chloride groups onto peptide chains in order to form chlorinated peptides. 4HPDMS reacts with formic acid and photolyzes to release hydrogen chloride, which can be used to synthesize epoxides. The reaction of 4HPDMS with singlet oxygen produces chlorine gas and singlet oxygen, which have been shown to react with urea derivatives under certain conditions. The kinetics of this reaction are well studied and are found to be first order in both reactants. Anthracene has been used as a fluorescent probe for these reactions because it absorbs energy from light at the same wavelength as the reaction center of the reagent, which is near 450 nm.
