Description:
3-Methoxyfuran-2-carbaldehyde is a synthetic compound that inhibits the growth of bacteria by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit. It acts by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis and has been shown to be effective against methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). 3-Methoxyfuran-2-carbaldehyde binds to the penicillin binding proteins in the bacterial cell wall by competitive inhibition. This binding prevents the formation of an antibiotic inhibitor complex with the enzyme cell wall synthesis that is required for cell wall biosynthesis, inhibiting protein synthesis and cell division. The high frequency of human activity has been shown using a patch clamp technique on human erythrocytes.
