Ruthenium(III) nitrosylchloride hydrate is a yellow-brown solid that is soluble in water. It is a powerful oxidizing agent and can be used to oxidize alcohols, phenols, and other organic compounds. Ruthenium(III) nitrosylchloride hydrate decomposes at high temperatures and can be made by the electrolysis of ruthenium dioxide dissolved in cyclohexanol with additives. The average particle diameter of this compound is less than 10 μm. This chemical has been shown to reduce perovskite crystals to the alkali metal form, which are liquid at room temperature. Phenolphthalein has been shown to be a good indicator for this compound due to its constant color.
