(S)-2,2'-Dimethyl-1,1'-binaphthyl is a solvent that has been used in the production of coatings, as well as in other industrial applications. It has been shown to be reactive with hydroxyl groups and other reactive functional groups. (S)-2,2'-Dimethyl-1,1'-binaphthyl has also been found to have an activation energy of 36.6 kcal/mol. (S)-2,2'-Dimethyl-1,1'-binaphthyl is soluble in organic solvents and is nonpolar. It has an x-ray crystal structure that consists of two biphenyl molecules linked together by two methylene bridges. The biphenyl molecules are linked together at the 2 and 7 positions with one hydrogen atom at each position. This molecule can absorb ultraviolet light due to its electron-donating ability and its conjugated system of double bonds.
