Ampicilloic acid is used for the detection of bacteria and viruses in water, wastewater, and other samples. The sample preparation is typically a dilution with distilled water or a simple extraction from the sample. The particle size is determined using a laser diffraction instrument. Ampicilloic acid reacts with the target organism to form an enzyme-substrate complex that can be detected by color change. The reaction mechanism has been shown to be similar to that of α-amylase, which can hydrolyze maltose into glucose and maltotriose, while ampicilloic acid hydrolyzes p-nitrophenyl acetate into p-nitrophenol and acetate.
