Glycohyocholic acid is a fatty acid that is found in the bile of most mammals. It is produced from the amino acid tryptophan by the enzyme hydroxylase and can be used as a diagnostic marker for cancer, especially lung cancer. Glycohyocholic acid has also been shown to play a role in fatty acid metabolism, as it can be converted into taurocholic acid. This conversion may be due to the presence of 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5HIAA) in the body, which is a product of tryptophan metabolism. The detection of glycohyocholic acid in bronchial secretions may indicate an active infection with tuberculosis.
