Ethyl cycloheptanecarboxylate (ECHA) is a biphenyl compound that is structurally related to the fluorinated alkylcyclohexane carboxylic acid ethyl esters. It is used as an anti-inflammatory agent and has been shown to be efficacious in animals with chronic bronchitis. In addition, ECHA has been found to have therapeutic effects on autoimmune diseases, congestive heart failure, and acrylates. The mechanism of action of ECHA appears to be due to its ability to inhibit the enzyme acrylates hydrolase, which converts acrylates into acrylic acid and water. This inhibition prevents the formation of reactive oxygen species from acrylates, which are involved in inflammatory responses.
