6-Aminopyridine-3-sulfonamide is a drug that inhibits the activity of the enzyme, cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP), which transfers cholesterol from high-density lipoprotein to low-density lipoprotein. This agent also inhibits the formation of atherosclerotic plaque in arteries and can prevent cardiovascular disease. 6-Aminopyridine-3-sulfonamide has been shown to inhibit lipid peroxidation, a process that damages cells by creating free radicals, and may be used as an antioxidant. 6-Aminopyridine-3-sulfonamide also has biological activity against organophosphates, which are compounds that inhibit acetylcholinesterase, an enzyme found in nerve tissue.
