Description

Trans-7,8-dihydroxy-7,8-dihydrobenzo[A]pyrene (BPDE) is a carcinogenic compound that can be found in cigarette smoke. BPDE is a potent inhibitor of cytochrome P450 and mitochondrial cytochrome P450 activities, which are enzymes involved in the metabolism of drugs. This inhibition leads to the accumulation of reactive metabolites that can cause DNA damage. Trans-7,8-dihydroxy-7,8-dihydrobenzo[A]pyrene has been shown to inhibit transcriptional regulation in liver cells and skin models as well as protein synthesis in rat liver microsomes and CD1 mice.
