4-Nitrothiophene-2-carbaldehyde (4NTCA) belongs to the class of nitro compounds. The molecular structure of 4NTCA has been determined by X-ray crystallography, and is a planar molecule with a nitrogen atom in the center and four carbonyl groups on each side. 4NTCA is an organometallic compound that can be used to synthesize heterocyclic rings. It is selective against trypomastigotes, while not affecting epimastigotes, which makes it an effective treatment for Chagas disease. This compound has been evaluated by voltammetry techniques and shown to have high selectivity index values. 4NTCA also shows promising biological properties such as inhibiting mitochondrial electron transport chain complexes I and II, which may lead to cell death.
