2,4-Dihydroxyphenylacetonitrile (2,4-DHPA) is a natural phenolic compound that is found in the environment. It has been shown to have allelopathic effects on other plants. 2,4-DHPA is hydrosoluble and can be absorbed through the roots of plants. 2,4-DHPA inhibits the synthesis of p-hydroxybenzoic acid, vanillic acid, caffeic acid and heathlands. 2,4-DHPA also has an inhibitory effect on ferulic acid and protocatechuic acid. This chemical is present in many foods such as coffee beans and cocoa beans.
