5(S),15(S)-Dihydroxy-6(E),8(Z),10(Z),13(E)-eicosatetraenoic acid is a metabolite of arachidonic acid that has been found to have chemotactic activity. It is activated by two enzymes, 5-lipoxygenase and 15-lipoxygenase, which convert it to leukotrienes. The synthesis of 5-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid (5HETE) is catalyzed by the enzyme cytochrome P450, and this reaction is inhibited by aspirin. The biosynthesis of 5-HETE is catalyzed by the enzyme dihydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid synthase (DHET). The biological effects of 5-HETE are due to its activation at the cell membrane; it binds to a receptor on the leukocyte surface and stimulates chemotaxis
