4-Methoxy-D-homophenylalanine is a therapeutic agent that has been shown to be effective in the treatment of pulmonary diseases. It is a prodrug of 4-methoxytyrosine, which inhibits the activity of phosphodiesterase enzymes. This results in increased levels of cAMP and bronchodilation. 4-Methoxy-D-homophenylalanine has also been shown to have antiapoptotic properties, as well as being an antioxidant. The drug has also been shown to inhibit the growth of genetically engineered murine lung cells with emphysema and increase their viability. 4-Methoxy-D-homophenylalanine has also been shown to have a marked affinity for alveolar macrophages, which may contribute to its effectiveness in treating pulmonary disease.
