Fluoxetine is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressant, used for the treatment of major depressive disorder and other mood disorders. It is a potent inhibitor of neuronal serotonin uptake and has been shown to inhibit the activity of diploid cells in culture. Fluoxetine inhibits uptake by binding to the transporter protein and prevents it from recycling serotonin. Fluoxetine has also been shown to increase the number of hybridization sites for DNA probes that are complementary to diploid cells. This drug is an effective antidepressant, but does not seem to be as effective in women as in men. Fluoxetine binds to the enzyme which catalyzes the synthesis of shikimate, one of three compounds which are precursors for aromatic amino acids. The inhibition of this enzyme may lead to decreased levels of other aromatic amino acids such as tyrosine, phenylalanine, tryptophan, and histidine.
