The nature of the anion determines whether the alkylation occurs on the 1 or 2 position. If chloride is the anion, then alkylation will occur at the 1 position. If nitrogen atoms are present, then alkylation will occur on the 2 position. Deuteration of 1-phenyl-2-pyrimidin-2-yl ethanone has been shown to inhibit malondialdehyde production and reduce reactive oxygen species.
