It is formed by the action of cytosolic 5-lipoxygenase on arachidonic acid and functions as an intermediate in the synthesis of leukotriene A4. This metabolite has been shown to induce chemotaxis of human leukocytes. 5,6-DHETE has also been shown to be a substrate for epoxide hydrolase and epoxide reductase, which converts it to its corresponding alcohols, 5,6-dihydroxyeicosatrienoic acid and 7,9,11,14-tetrahydroxyeicosatrienoic acid respectively.
