2-Amino-5-oxo-4-phenyl-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-4H-chromene-3-carbonitrile (2APC) is a hydrogen bonding molecule that is a conformationally restricted analog of the pyran. It has been shown to be effective against bacterial cells by inhibiting protein synthesis and cell division. 2APC binds to the ribosomal RNA in bacterial cells, blocking the binding of aminoacyl tRNA to the ribosome. This prevents formation of an aminoacyl tRNA complex with the ribosome and inhibits protein synthesis.
