Product Information
Enrofloxacin is a synthetic, broad-spectrum antibiotic that inhibits the growth of bacteria by binding to one or more bacterial ribosomal subunits. It is active against a wide range of microorganisms, including Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, Mycoplasma, Chlamydia, Rickettsiae and Spirochetes. Enrofloxacin also has antiviral properties against Herpes simplex virus (HSV) and HIV-1. The drug is well tolerated in animals with few side effects reported at therapeutic levels. However, enrofloxacin has been shown to induce erythrocyte hemolysis in canine blood samples. This may be due to its ability to inhibit protein synthesis by binding to ribosomes in eukaryotic cells.
Enrofloxacin ethyl ester is a prodrug for enrofloxacin that is slowly hydrolyzed into the active form in vivo.
