This compound has been shown to interact with both sulfonic and carboxyl groups, which may be due to its uncoordinated character. 6-Sulfonaphthalene-1,4-dicarboxylic acid adsorbs on surfaces by a process of physical adsorption and undergoes x-ray diffraction in two dimensions. X-ray diffraction studies have shown that this compound has a crystal structure with an orthorhombic unit cell with space group P2/c and lattice constants of a = 3.621 Å and c = 11.972 Å.
