4-Bromo-6-methyl-2H-pyran-2-one is a human ovarian carcinoma inhibitor. It has potent inhibitory activity against Staphylococcus aureus and is used to study the cross-coupling of 4-bromo-6-methylpyranones with trialkylboranes. This compound also has potent inhibitory activity against terminal alkynes and myelogenous leukemia cells. Synthetic methods for this compound have been developed, which include the synthesis of ring A via an organometallic coupling reaction with aluminum chloride. The ring B was synthesized by a synthetic route that involved the conversion of the pyranone to an acid chloride followed by cross coupling with 1,3,5 trimethylbenzene and reduction with lithium aluminum hydride.
