1-Ethenyl-4-(1-ethoxyethoxy)benzene is a fluorinated molecule that has been shown to have atherogenic properties. It is a building block for the fabrication of self-assembled nanogels with well-defined architectures and a wide variety of applications. The fluorine atom in this molecule can be quaternized by reacting with an alkyl halide, such as methyl iodide or ethyl bromide, to form 1-ethenyl-4-(1-methoxyethoxy)benzene. This reaction forms a covalent bond between the fluorine and the methyl group on the alkyl halide. The resulting product is called pegylated 1-ethenyl-4-(1-methoxyethoxy)benzene. This compound has been used as an additive in polypropylene, polystyrene, polyethylene, polyurethane, and polycarbonate plastics
