Description:

4-Amino-3-chloro-5-methylbenzoic acid is a white crystalline solid that has been shown to be effective against many species of insects. It is used as an insecticide and also has some antibacterial properties. 4-Amino-3-chloro-5-methylbenzoic acid is toxic to insects because it inhibits the enzyme chitin synthase, which is required for the synthesis of chitin, a major component of insect exoskeletons. This chemical binds reversibly to diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella) cuticle and causes paralysis, leading to death. The crystal structure of this compound has been determined by X ray diffraction studies.
