BDE No 138 is a congener of the polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) that are used as flame retardants. It has been detected in human serum and tissues, including adipose tissue. BDE No 138 can be debrominated to form 2,2',4,4'-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-138), which can lead to genotoxic effects. The analytical method for measuring BDE No 138 is based on gas chromatography with electron capture detection or high-resolution mass spectrometry. The method is sensitive enough to detect BDE No 138 in wastewater treatment samples at concentrations as low as 0.1 ng/L and it provides an accurate measure of the total amount of PBDEs present in a sample.
