8-Hydroxy-5-quinolinesulfonic acid hydrate (8HQ) is a diammonium salt that can be used as an indicator for the detection of bilirubin in blood. It exhibits a strong color change from yellow to red when it reacts with bilirubin. 8HQ is also used as an indicator of platelet activation, which is caused by acetylsalicylic acid and 4-hydroxycoumarin. This chemical has been immobilized onto an aluminum oxide surface, forming an electrochemical sensor that changes its electrical resistance depending on the concentration of acetylsalicylic acid or 4-hydroxyphenolphthalein in solution.
