Product Information
PTIQ is a drug that is used to reduce the pain associated with arthritis. It has been shown to be effective in reducing pain and improving function in people who have osteoarthritis of the knee. PTIQ has also been shown to be effective in reducing pain and improving function in patients with rheumatoid arthritis, although it does not work as well as other drugs for this condition. In addition, PTIQ has been shown to reduce pain and improve function in people with post-herpetic neuralgia, a chronic pain condition caused by herpes zoster (shingles). PTIQ is not active against bacteria or fungi, but does show some activity against certain viruses such as hepatitis C virus. It is unclear how PTIQ works at the cellular level. However, it may block the release of inflammatory molecules from cells called microglia that are activated by metal ions (e.g., iron) and lead to an increase in blood pressure and death of liver cells.
