Betulin is a natural product that is found in the bark of the beech tree. It is an alkoxy group, conjugates with fatty acid, and has anti-HIV activity. Betulin palmitate is a new drug that will have anti-HIV activity. The mechanism of action for betulin palmitate is not yet known but it may be due to its ability to coat and protect cells from HIV infection. Betulin palmitate could also be used as an immunoconjugated antibody or as a coating material for latex products such as condoms.
